Book Overview

The hardest part of exercising is saying “yes” especially for mothers. The Power of Exercise for Mothers, an inspirational book of bite-sized exercise wisdom, motivational stories and practical advice, aims to encourage and gently nudge women onto the track, bike, stairmaster or into the pool, and shout a resounding “Yes!” to exercise.

The Power of Exercise is for every mother. It is for new mothers, trying to get into shape after pregnancy. It is for those mothers who, with grown children still dependent on “mom” to assist with their own complicated schedules and endless obligations, haven‚t prioritized their own needs for years. It is for the millions of mothers twenty-five to fifty years old, or even older in the case of today's world when kids don't leave home, who quietly struggle and suffer from low motivation and low energy, and who are unhappy with their physical selves. By sharing words of encouragement, anecdotes from other mothers, and innovative exercise tips, The Power of Exercise for Mothers invites women to enrich motherhood with the many gifts of healthy living as a result of exercising.

With her experience as a triathlete, fitness coach, and mother of two, 48-year-old author Barbara Peterson, is uniquely positioned to champion exercise for mothers. She offers practical advice, technical tips and inspiration throughout The Four Phases of Fitness: Motivation, Beginning, Commitment and Exhilaration. Under each heading, Barbara highlights 15 guiding principles that, in realistic and positive terms, move her readers beyond the common challenges mothers confront while trying to exercise. In the first section, "Motivation," Barbara proclaims the necessity of exercise, introduces the myriad benefits, urges the elimination of excuses, and helps mothers mentally adapt to an exercise routine. Her guiding principles, such as Mothers Deserve It; Saying Yes to Exercise; No to Excuses; and Routines Rule: Developing Your Exercise Habit, educate and motivate mothers to reorganize their schedules and create an improved lifestyle. The second section, "Beginning," goes beyond mental adaptations with construction of a real exercise plan. This section discusses the nuances of warming up and getting started, from proper stretching and hydration, to using equipment and setting goals. Practical instruction as well as nurturing encouragement is provided in the guiding inspirations such as: Finding the Exercise You Love; Creating Your Mother Mantras; Getting Into Your Rhythm; Setting Goals. The third section, "Commitment," delves into the nuts and bolts of regular exercise with topics such as Iron Resolve; Getting Support from Family; Sweat; and Getting Through the Rough Spots. Finally, the payoff, in "Exhilaration," the fourth section, punctuates the book with the myriad rewards of exercise, such as Eating; Sex; Self-Love; and Tapping the Power Within.

Each guiding principle consists of Peterson's intriguing experiences, her concrete fitness advice and stories from over 75 women about the role exercise has played in their motherhood experience. Additionally, the page spread includes a quick-read, easily digested sidebar with either one of the following:

·Exercise Tip (ex. "Your Way to Awesome Abs;" "Understanding Heart Rate;" "Building Your Core Strength") or Fitness Advise (Energy Bars To Go)
·Inspiring Fitness Fact labeled "It’s a Fact"
·Affirmation
